Dentistry: Cosmetic Dental Care
June 19, 2008 – 12:00 pmThe world of cosmetic dentistry is rapidly expanding. With the exponential increase in tools available to the dentist, there is a consequent increase in the range of options open to the casual dentistry client. It is no longer the case that the trip to the dentist need be a tedious must do on your list.
It is fairly safe to say that most of us do not often go to the dentist of our own volition. We go because were supposed to. It is what our parents taught us to do. There is a great reason for this. Many of us associate trips to the dentist with pain and a general feeling of unease.
Nowadays, there are a lot of reasons to go to the dentist, and not all of them are just to get your six-month check up. While it is generally considered a good practice to go to the dentist for a cleaning every six months, some are choosing to go to the dentist for procedures that are above and beyond mere cleanings. Some choose to go to the dentist to help improve their smiles in a way that stretches far beyond the powers of your standard check up.
Cosmetic Dentistry Comes of Age
There are some really wonderful options available to those of us who are interested in improving our smiles. Tooth whitening is one of the most popular cosmetic dentistry procedures available to the public. This is a process whereby years of yellowing can be safely removed from our teeth so that they can effectively be brought back to their original white color.
Teeth yellow for any number of reasons including simple age, as well as coffee, tea or wine consumption. Teeth can also take on a grayish color due to what are called tetracycline stains. All of these discolorations can be removed or at least covered up using modern cosmetic dentistry practices. Most teeth can be whitened several shades with just one visit to a cosmetic dentist.
In addition to whitening, cosmetic dentists can replace the standard grayish metal fillings that many of us carry around. These unsightly lumps of metal are really quite unnecessary when there are better options available. Dentists now have access to fillings that are tooth colored and thus virtually invisible.
Porcelain Veneers Can Bring Back a Smile
If you happen to have a chipped or badly repaired tooth, porcelain veneers can be an excellent way to bring your smile back. These permanent solutions to damaged teeth are fairly simple to have installed. The procedure essentially involves taking a wax impression of your teeth, forming a mold for a new tooth, and installing it. A good cosmetic dentist can complete the whole process in seven to ten days with minimal discomfort.
Of course one of the biggest concerns when it comes to dentistry of any kind is the pain involved. Some people dont want a better smile if its going to cause them undue pain and stress. Thankfully there have been some wonderful advancements in this area of dentistry as well. There are new air abrasion drills that minimize the pain of getting a filling to such a degree that an anesthetic injection is completely unnecessary. There are also some great computerized injection systems that make getting an anesthetic injection completely worry free.
